Handles on Shaker cabinets are normally positioned on the flat stile of the door rather than in the recessed center panel. Upper-cabinet handles are placed near the lower outside corner, while base-cabinet handles are placed near the upper outside corner.
Drawer handles are generally centered on the drawer front, but the exact position depends on the rail width, drawer height, pull length, and overall cabinet design.
A Shaker cabinet door contains five visible sections:
Two vertical stiles
A top rail
A bottom rail
A recessed center panel
Knobs and pulls should normally be mounted through a solid stile or rail. Drilling through the edge of the recessed center panel may provide less support and can look visually unbalanced.
For a standard cabinet door, the handle is placed on the stile opposite the hinge side.
This gives the user mechanical advantage when opening the door and keeps the hardware close to the natural hand position.
For an upper cabinet, position the knob or lower end of the pull near the bottom of the opening-side stile.
A knob is often aligned near the point where the bottom rail meets the vertical stile. It may be centered within the width of the stile or moved slightly toward the inner edge according to the design.
A vertical pull can be placed with its lower fixing point close to the bottom rail. The complete pull then extends upward along the stile.
Keep all upper-cabinet handles at one consistent height. Even a small difference becomes visible when several doors are installed in one straight row.
Base-Cabinet Hardware is normally positioned near the top of the opening-side stile.
Knobs can be placed close to the top rail and stile intersection. Vertical pulls commonly have their upper fixing point near the top of the door, allowing the handle to extend downward.
This placement reduces the need to bend and keeps the grip away from the floor.
Do not place the handle too close to the panel edge. Sufficient material must remain around the hole to reduce the risk of splitting, cracking, or deformation.
A handle on a slab drawer front is generally centered horizontally and vertically.
A Shaker drawer front has a frame and recessed panel, so buyers have several layout choices.
A knob or short pull can be centered within the complete drawer front. When the top and bottom rails are narrow, this usually creates the most balanced appearance.
A pull may be centered on the recessed panel or centered on the upper rail. The selected method should remain consistent throughout the cabinet set.
The handle can be centered slightly above the vertical midpoint to make it easier to reach. The visual relationship with nearby shallow drawers should still be checked.
A long pull provides one clean grip point. Two shorter pulls may also be used, but they must be positioned symmetrically.
When two pulls are fitted, divide the drawer visually into equal sections rather than placing the handles close to the outer edges.
Knobs create a simple traditional appearance and require only one hole. They are suitable for lightweight doors and small drawers.
Pull handles provide a larger grip area and distribute pulling force through two fixing points. They are practical for deep drawers, pantry units, waste-bin drawers, and frequently used kitchen cabinets.
A common mixed arrangement uses:
Knobs on cabinet doors
Pull handles on drawers
Longer pulls on appliance panels or pantry doors
Another approach uses the same pull style throughout the kitchen in different lengths.
The decision should be made before drilling so the complete cabinet set follows one visual system.
Do not measure every door separately with a ruler.
Make or purchase a drilling jig that references the door edge and the selected handle position. Test it on a spare panel or sample door first.
The template should identify:
Distance from the door edge
Distance from the top or bottom
Center-to-center hole spacing
Left- and right-hand orientation
Drawer-center reference
Different positions for doors and drawers
Clamp or hold the template firmly before drilling. Place a backing block behind the panel to reduce breakout as the drill bit exits.
Drill perpendicular to the door surface. Angled holes can prevent the handle from sitting flat.
Temporarily attach sample handles using removable adhesive or reusable mounting putty.
Inspect the cabinet from several positions and test:
Handle comfort
Door swing
Drawer access
Corner-cabinet interference
Appliance clearance
Visual alignment
Accessibility for different users
Handles on adjacent corner cabinets can collide when both doors open. A longer projection or poorly selected position may also interfere with a wall, refrigerator, or dishwasher.
Correcting the layout on a sample is much easier than repairing an entire cabinet order.
