Types of Door Hardware: Hinges, Knobs, & Locks Explained

Hinges carry and guide the door, knobs or handles allow the user to operate it, and locks control whether it can be opened. These three types of door hardware perform separate jobs but must work as one system. When specifying commercial-grade door hinges, knobs, and locks, buyers need to match the components to the same door thickness, weight, function and operating frequency.

Hinges: The Load-Bearing Part of the Door

A hinge connects the door leaf to the frame and establishes the swing axis. Its size and construction affect alignment, opening effort and long-term movement.

Butt Hinges

Butt hinges are mortised into the edge of the door and frame. They are widely used on residential and commercial swing doors.

Ball-Bearing Hinges

Ball bearings reduce friction between the hinge knuckles. This can provide smoother operation on heavier or frequently used doors.

Concealed Hinges

Concealed hinges sit inside the door and frame, remaining hidden when the door is closed. Adjustable versions allow installers to correct the door position vertically, horizontally and in depth.

For example, our heavy-duty hidden hinge has a stated maximum door-weight reference of 200 kg with two hinges, a minimum door thickness of 60 mm and a 180-degree opening angle. These values only apply when the specified installation conditions are met.

Knobs and Handles: How the User Operates the Door

A door knob is gripped and rotated. A lever handle is pushed downward. A pull handle is pulled but may not operate a latch.

These products should not be treated as interchangeable.

Knobs offer a compact form and suit many traditional or residential interiors. Levers generally require less gripping and twisting effort. Pull handles work well on doors using separate latching, closing or locking hardware.

When comparing knobs and handles, check:

  • grip and ergonomics;

  • door handing;

  • spindle dimensions;

  • latch compatibility;

  • projection from the door;

  • escutcheon size;

  • mounting method;

  • accessibility requirements.

A knob or lever can be non-locking, privacy-controlled or connected to a keyed lock. Its visual form does not reveal its complete function.

Locks: What Holds or Secures the Door?

A latch keeps the door closed but allows normal operation through the handle. A lock prevents unauthorized operation through a key, cylinder, turn, code or access-control system.

Common functional groups include:

Passage Function

The handle retracts the latch, but there is no privacy or key locking. It is useful for corridors, living rooms and other unrestricted interior spaces.

Privacy Function

The door can be locked from inside, normally with a way to release it from outside during an emergency. Bathrooms and bedrooms often use this arrangement.

Entrance Function

A key or cylinder controls access from the outside. The inside operation must still match the building’s security and egress requirements.

Storeroom or Controlled-Access Function

These configurations restrict access to selected users and may behave differently from a normal residential entrance lock.

Lock terminology varies between markets. Buyers should specify the required operation from each side of the door rather than sending only the phrase “door lock.”

How the Three Components Affect One Another

A heavy door fitted with undersized hinges may sag. Once it sags, the latch no longer aligns with the strike plate. The user then pushes or lifts the handle to make the lock engage, increasing wear across the entire set.

Poor installation can create the same chain of problems. Incorrect hinge mortises change the door gap; a wrong backset places the handle incorrectly; a badly positioned strike prevents reliable latching.

For commercial-grade door hinges, knobs, and locks, selection should follow this order:

  1. establish door size, weight and construction;

  2. choose the hinge model and quantity;

  3. define passage, privacy or security function;

  4. select the compatible latch or lock;

  5. choose the operating handle or knob;

  6. coordinate finish and accessories;

  7. approve a fitted sample.

Add the Often-Forgotten Door Stop

The hinge controls movement, but it does not necessarily stop the door before the handle reaches the wall. A correctly placed door stop limits the swing and protects surrounding finishes.

Magnetic stops can also hold the door open where the application permits. Wall-mounted buffers are useful where floor fixing is undesirable.
