A sewn door draft stopper is a fabric tube filled with soft or granular material and placed along the bottom of a door. It helps reduce air movement through a visible floor gap, but it does not repair a misaligned door, damaged threshold, loose hinge, or failed perimeter seal.
This simple project can be completed with basic fabric and sewing tools. The most important decisions are the finished length, filler type, seam strength, and whether the stopper must move with the door.
Measure the width of the door rather than estimating from the doorway. For a loose draft stopper that rests on the floor, make the finished tube slightly longer than the door width so it covers the corners of the gap.
Next, measure the gap height. A narrow tube may not remain against a large gap, while an oversized tube can interfere with opening. Check the floor surface as well: thick carpet creates more drag than tile or wood.
Dense woven fabric is easier to sew and more resistant to wear than a loose or delicate textile. Canvas, upholstery fabric, denim, or another durable material can work well.
Washable applications benefit from a removable outer cover. In that construction, sew a closed inner filler tube and make the decorative cover separately with a zipper, hook-and-loop closure, or overlapping end.
Different fillers change the performance of a door draft stopper:
Polyester fiberfill creates a light, washable tube but may shift away from the door.
Fabric scraps provide moderate weight and reuse leftover material.
Dry rice or similar granular filler creates weight but adds moisture and pest concerns.
Plastic pellets resist organic decay but need a tightly woven inner liner.
A combination of fiberfill and weighted sections can balance sealing and handling.
Avoid loose, dusty material that can escape through seams. Homes with children or pets should use securely enclosed filler and avoid detachable decorative pieces.
Cut a rectangle long enough for the door width plus seam and end allowances. The rectangle width should create the desired tube circumference after folding.
Place the fabric with its finished sides facing inward. Fold it lengthwise and align the long edges. Pin or clip the layers so they do not shift.
Stitch along the long edge with a consistent seam allowance. Reinforce the beginning and end. A second seam can provide extra security when using fine granular filler.
Sew one short end closed. Turn the tube right side out and push out the corners carefully.
Fill gradually rather than packing the entire tube at once. Keep enough flexibility for the stopper to rest evenly across the threshold.
Fold the raw edges inward and sew the remaining end closed. A removable cover is preferable when regular washing is expected.
A loose draft stopper must be repositioned whenever the door opens. A double-sided under-door design moves with the door, but it requires careful sizing so it does not drag excessively or obstruct closing.
Do not attach fabric near a fire-rated door, emergency exit, automatic closer, or accessible route without confirming project requirements. A draft solution must not interfere with latching, required clearances, or safe egress.
Persistent gaps sometimes result from loose hinges, door sag, an incorrectly positioned strike, or frame movement. Tightening suitable hinge screws or correcting alignment may reduce the uneven gap before any fabric stopper is added.
