A door can be stopped from opening all the way with a hinge pin stop, floor stop, wall stop, overhead restrictor, door closer with controlled opening, or purpose-designed door limiter. The correct solution depends on how far the door may open and what must be protected behind it.

Before selecting hardware, identify the reason for limiting movement. Protecting drywall from a handle requires a different solution from preventing a door from striking glass, furniture, plumbing fixtures, or another door.

First Define the Maximum Opening Angle

Open the door slowly until it reaches the safest practical position. Check handle clearance, passage width, hinge movement, nearby fittings, and user access.

Mark the stopping position with removable tape. Do not place the stop so early that it narrows the doorway, obstructs wheelchair access, interferes with moving equipment, or creates difficulty during evacuation.

Solution 1: Hinge Pin Stop

A hinge pin stop fits around a removable hinge pin and uses two padded contact points to limit rotation. It requires no floor or wall drilling and is suitable for many light interior doors.

Its compact design also concentrates force near the hinge. It should not be the default choice for oversized, heavy, high-traffic, or wind-loaded doors.

Solution 2: Floor-Mounted Stop

A floor stop creates a solid stopping point at a selected opening angle. It works where the wall is too far away or where the handle would hit furniture before reaching the wall.

Place it far enough from the hinge to reduce leverage on the hardware, but outside the main walking line where possible. Confirm the floor construction before drilling.

Solution 3: Wall-Mounted Stop

A wall stop is normally installed where the door handle approaches the wall. Its rubber bumper absorbs contact and prevents direct impact.

The fixing must be secure, and the contact position must match a structurally sound part of the door. Long projections can bend or loosen when repeatedly hit by a heavy door.

Solution 4: Overhead Restrictor

An overhead door limiter or stay controls travel from the top of the door. It can provide a cleaner floor area and may suit doors where wall and floor stops are impractical.

These devices must be selected for the door dimensions, weight, frame construction, and expected usage. Installation geometry affects the final opening angle and load.

Solution 5: Door Closer With Backcheck

Some door closers include backcheck, which adds resistance as the door approaches a wide-open position. Backcheck slows the motion; it should not always be treated as a rigid mechanical stop.

For doors exposed to strong opening forces, the closer and separate stop may need to work together. Closer adjustment should follow the manufacturer’s instructions because excessive settings can make the door difficult to use or damage internal components.

Why a Wedge Is Not an Opening Limiter

A wedge is normally used to hold a door open. It does not create a reliable maximum opening angle and can move under load.

Improvised ropes, chains, furniture, and adhesive pads may also fail unpredictably. A permanent risk deserves purpose-designed hardware with suitable fasteners.

Select by Risk, Not Convenience

For a light bedroom door, a hinge pin stop may be sufficient. A floor-mounted stop is more appropriate when a firm, repeatable angle is required. Heavy commercial doors may need an overhead limiter or professionally specified closer-and-stop arrangement.
