A door stopper should hold or limit a door without damaging the door leaf, wall, floor, hinge, or nearby hardware. Proper use depends on the type of door stopper, the direction of travel, the door weight, the floor or wall material, and whether the door is fire-rated.
A poorly positioned stopper can twist the hinges, loosen its fixings, damage the wall, or create a trip hazard. Installation is therefore more important than simply placing an object behind the door.
Door stoppers perform two different functions.
A door stop limits how far a door opens, preventing the lever handle or door edge from hitting a wall. A door holder keeps the door in an open position until someone releases it.
Some products perform both functions, but buyers should not assume that every stopper is designed to hold a moving or heavy door.
A floor-mounted door stopper is fixed to the floor along the door’s opening path. Position it where the door makes controlled contact without forcing the hinges beyond their intended range.
Before drilling:
Open the door to the desired maximum angle.
Check the lever handle’s clearance from the wall.
Mark the contact point near the outer portion of the door.
Confirm that no pipe, cable, heating element, or waterproofing layer is below the floor.
Use fixings compatible with concrete, tile, wood, or another substrate.
Do not position the stopper too close to the hinge. Contact near the hinge gives the moving door greater leverage against the leaf, frame, and fixings.
Wall-mounted door stoppers work well when floor drilling is undesirable. The stopper should contact a solid part of the door rather than glass, a decorative panel, or an unsupported thin section.
Position it where the handle would otherwise strike the wall. Confirm that the wall fixing enters a suitable substrate. A screw installed only into weak plasterboard may loosen after repeated impacts.
Place a wedge under the free edge of the door, not close to the hinge. Push it only far enough to create secure friction.
The wedge must suit the floor surface and gap beneath the door. A smooth wedge on polished tile may slide, while an oversized wedge can lift the door and place stress on the hinges.
Remove portable wedges from walkways when they are not being used. They can become trip hazards in corridors and public spaces.
A fire door should not be held open with an ordinary wedge or mechanical holder unless the complete arrangement is permitted by the applicable fire-safety requirements. Unapproved hold-open devices can prevent the door from closing during a fire.
Use an approved electromagnetic or controlled hold-open system where required, and coordinate it with the door closer, alarm system, and local regulations.
Check the stopper periodically for loose screws, cracked rubber, bent components, sharp edges, and floor movement. Tighten fixings before repeated impact enlarges the mounting hole.
Clean metal finishes with mild detergent and a soft cloth. Avoid strong chemicals or abrasive pads that may damage plated, painted, or stainless steel surfaces.
