The three broad types of door handles are lever handles, pull handles, and door knobs. This classification is based on how the user operates the door: pressing a lever, pulling a fixed grip, or turning a knob. Each family contains many subtypes, so answering what are the three types of door handles is only the first step. The lock function, door movement, fixing method, and installation environment still determine the correct hardware.
A lever handle rotates around a spindle. Pressing the lever turns that spindle and retracts the latch inside the door edge. When released, the spring mechanism returns the lever and allows the latch to project again.
Levers can be mounted on round roses, square roses, or long plates. A long plate may include a keyhole, Euro cylinder opening, or privacy thumb turn. A rose-mounted lever separates the handle from the lock escutcheon, creating a more compact visual arrangement.
Lever length, projection, return shape, grip profile, spindle fit, and spring support influence how the handle feels after repeated use. The lever must also match the latch or mortise lock rather than being selected as a decorative part in isolation.
A pull handle remains fixed while the user applies force directly to open the door. It does not normally retract a latch through a spindle. Pull handles appear on entrance doors, glass doors, sliding doors, paired doors, and push/pull commercial openings.
Back-to-back pull handles place a grip on both faces of the door. Single-sided handles may be combined with a push plate on the opposite face. Flush pulls sit partly or fully within the door surface, reducing projection on sliding or pocket doors.
Fixing centers, handle projection, door thickness, bolt arrangement, glass-hole preparation, and clearance must be confirmed before production or installation. A strong pull handle cannot compensate for an unsuitable fixing into a weak door structure.
A door knob rotates to retract a latch. Its compact circular form works well with classic interiors and doors where a projecting lever could catch clothing or nearby objects. Operation requires the user to grip and twist, which may be less convenient for people with limited hand strength.
Knobs may be passage, privacy, keyed, or dummy types. As with lever handles, these words describe function rather than appearance. The latch backset, bore preparation, door thickness, spindle or mechanism, and handing requirements should be confirmed for the selected set.
Use the door function as the first filter:
Choose a lever when the door must operate a latch and easy downward movement is preferred.
Choose a pull handle when the user should move the door directly without operating a lever latch.
Choose a knob when compact proportions and a turning action match the room and user group.
Next, compare material, finish, traffic level, cleaning routine, lock compatibility, and fixing method. A hotel corridor, private bedroom, storefront, office meeting room, and sliding wardrobe create different operating conditions even when the finish schedule is identical.
