To take a door off its hinges, first identify the hinge type, support the weight of the door, and release the hinge connection without allowing the door to fall or twist. A traditional butt hinge may use removable pins, while concealed hinges, clip-on cabinet hinges, lift-off hinges, and fixed-pin security hinges require different removal methods.
Heavy entrance doors, fire doors, glass doors, and large commercial doors should be handled by trained installers because their weight and hardware can cause injury or damage.
Open the door and inspect the visible hardware.

Ball-bearing, spring-loaded, security, and fire-door hinges may contain fixed components or controlled tension. Incorrect disassembly can damage the hinge or release stored force.
Clear the floor around the opening.
Remove door stops, hooks, or connected closers only when required and according to their instructions. Protect the floor with cardboard, a blanket, or a thin board.
Prepare a support under the open edge of the door. A wedge, purpose-made door lifter, or second person can prevent the door from dropping when the hinge connection is released.
Before removal:
Check the approximate door weight.
Remove items hanging on the door.
Disconnect powered locks or access-control wiring safely.
Mark the hinge positions.
Photograph the hardware.
Keep screws and pins in labeled containers.
Protect finished surfaces from tools.
Do not rely on one person to hold a large solid door while removing the final hinge.
Open the door partly and support its weight.
Begin with the bottom hinge. Insert a suitable pin punch or narrow tool beneath the hinge pin and tap it upward carefully.
Once enough of the pin is exposed, grip it from above and pull it out.
Repeat the process for the middle hinge and then the top hinge. Keep the top hinge connected until the door is stable and ready to be lifted away.
With assistance, move the door sideways until the hinge leaves separate. Store the door upright on padded supports rather than leaning it loosely against a wall.
If the pin does not move, check for:
A decorative cap
Paint bridging the joint
Corrosion
A retaining screw
A non-removable security design
A fixed ball-bearing structure
Do not strike the hinge repeatedly with excessive force.
When the hinge pin cannot be removed, the hinge leaf must normally be unscrewed from either the door or frame.
Support the door before loosening any screws.
Remove screws from the lower hinge first, followed by the middle hinge. Keep the top hinge secured until another person is holding the door.
For old screws with damaged heads, use a correctly sized driver and steady pressure. A slipping tool can damage the surrounding finish.
If the screw rotates without tightening or loosening, the timber or threaded insert may already be damaged. Additional repair may be required before the door is reinstalled.
Many concealed cabinet hinges connect to the mounting plate using a clip or release lever.
Open the cabinet door fully and support it with one hand.
Starting with the bottom hinge, press the release mechanism and separate the hinge arm from the mounting plate. Repeat at the top while another person steadies a large door.
Some concealed hinges do not have a quick-release clip. Their hinge arms are secured to the mounting plates by screws, which should be loosened in a controlled order.
Do not remove the round hinge cup from the back of the cabinet door unless the hinge itself is being replaced.
Keep left- and right-hand doors identified so they return to the correct cabinet opening.
A lift-off hinge allows the door to be raised vertically after it reaches the required open position. Sufficient clearance above the door is necessary.
Architectural concealed hinges sit inside routed pockets in the door and frame. The door may need to be supported while hinge-body screws are released.
Adjustable concealed hinges can contain several screws with different functions. Some control alignment rather than fixing the hinge to the door.
Mark adjustment positions before loosening anything. Removing the wrong screw may disturb the setting and make reinstallation more difficult.
Clean the hinge leaves and inspect them for wear, cracks, loose bearings, corrosion, or bent components.
When reinstalling a pin-hinged door, align the hinge leaves and insert the top pin first. Install the remaining pins after the door is supported.

Closing force
Hinge noise
Screw tightness
Contact with the floor or frame
Do not continue operating a sagging door. Loose fixings can enlarge the screw holes and place additional load on the remaining hinges.
