Installing door hinges on a cabinet requires selecting the correct hinge type, marking every drilling position accurately, fixing the hinges square to the door, mounting the plates at consistent heights, and adjusting the completed door until the gaps are even.
Modern cabinet doors often use concealed cup hinges, while traditional inset or framed doors may use butt hinges, surface-mounted hinges, semi-concealed hinges, or pivot hardware.
The hinge must match the cabinet construction and door position.
Common cabinet-door arrangements include:
Full overlay
The closed door covers most of the cabinet side panel or face-frame opening.
Half overlay
Two doors share one central cabinet partition.
Inset
The closed door sits inside the cabinet opening and remains approximately flush with the surrounding frame.
Partial overlay
The door covers only part of the cabinet face frame.
A full-overlay concealed hinge cannot automatically be used for an inset door. The hinge arm, mounting plate, cup position, opening angle, and cabinet structure all influence the final door position.

Large, tall, heavy, or glass-panel doors may require additional hinges.
Place the cabinet door face down on a clean padded surface.
Mark the top and bottom hinge positions using one consistent reference edge. Avoid placing a cup hole too close to a rail joint, glass insert, groove, or thin panel section.
For two-hinge cabinet doors, the hinges are normally positioned near the upper and lower ends while leaving enough solid material around the drilling area.
A third or fourth hinge may be added for taller or heavier doors. Do not place all hinges according to appearance alone; consider load distribution and the hardware supplier’s specification.
Transfer the same height references to the cabinet side panel or face frame.
A hinge jig reduces layout errors across a multi-door project.
Many common European-style cabinet hinges use a 35 mm cup, but the exact cup diameter, depth, and edge offset must be confirmed from the selected hinge.
Use a sharp Forstner bit and a drill guide or jig.
Before drilling:
Confirm the door thickness.
Set the depth stop.
Test the setup on scrap material.
Clamp the door securely.
Check the edge offset.
Keep the drill perpendicular.
Drill gradually and remove chips so the bit does not overheat.
The hole must be deep enough for the hinge cup to sit flat without penetrating the front face of the door.
Do not rely on a general 35 mm measurement alone. Different hinge models may require different drilling distances from the door edge.
Place the hinge cup inside the drilled hole.
Align the hinge arm square to the door edge. Mark the fixing holes or use the pattern already established by the jig.
Drill small pilot holes when required by the screw and door material. Pilot holes help reduce splitting and make it easier to keep the fixing screws straight.
Tighten both cup screws evenly. The hinge flange should sit flat against the back of the door without rocking.
Do not overtighten screws in MDF, particleboard, or thin engineered panels. Excessive torque can strip the material and weaken the fixing.
Press-in or expansion-dowel hinges require the matching drilling pattern and installation method.
Mark a vertical reference line inside the cabinet.
Position each mounting plate at the same height as the hinge attached to the door. The setback from the cabinet front depends on the hinge system and desired overlay.
Use a jig or one verified sample cabinet to establish the plate position.
Attach the mounting plates with suitable screws. Confirm that they are:
Level
Parallel
At matching heights
Firmly fixed
Suitable for the cabinet material
Positioned clear of shelves and drawers
For face-frame cabinets, an adapter plate or different hinge structure may be required.
Ask another person to support a large or heavy door.
Connect the top hinge first, then attach the lower hinges. Clip-on hinges should lock securely onto the mounting plates.
Open and close the door slowly before making adjustments.
Check whether the door contacts the cabinet, adjacent door, shelf, countertop, or handle.
When the hinge binds, do not force the door. Confirm that the cup and mounting plates are aligned and that the hinge model matches the cabinet structure.
Many concealed hinges provide three adjustment directions.
Side-to-side adjustment
Moves the door left or right and changes the gap between adjacent doors.
Depth adjustment
Moves the door closer to or farther from the cabinet body.
Height adjustment
Raises or lowers the door through the mounting plate or hinge system.
Make small adjustments and check the result after each change.
Begin by setting the door height. Then correct the side gap and finish with the depth position.
The final door should:
Open without rubbing.
Close fully.
Maintain an even perimeter gap.
Align with adjacent fronts.
Remain stable when open.
Engage the soft-close mechanism correctly.
Recheck the screws after several opening cycles.
Traditional cabinet doors may use small butt hinges or surface-mounted decorative hinges.
Position the hinge leaf against the door and cabinet frame, then mark the outline and screw locations.
A butt hinge may require a shallow mortise so the hinge leaf sits flush with the material. Cut the recess carefully with a router, hinge jig, or sharp chisel.
The mortise depth should match the hinge-leaf thickness. A recess that is too deep can pull the door toward the frame, while a proud hinge can create an oversized closing gap.
Predrill screw holes and install one screw in each leaf before testing the door. Add the remaining screws after the alignment has been confirmed.
